Ceiling Fans!!

When we first moved into our House our only furniture we had was a bedroom set that came with a ceiling fan and an old nasty couch with a clean new slip cover. We did use some of our wedding gift cards to The Home Depot for a second ceiling fan and cleaning supplies. The first order of business for us was to put up the ceiling fans so we wouldn't have to use the AC to cool the entire home.

If anyone has had the opportunity to install a ceiling fan they realize that it's not hard to do if you have a screw driver and can read directions. You just put some wire's together and it's done. The reason I am posting this blog is not for the people that know how to install the fans but for people like the girl that sat next to me at work and was willing to pay a handy may $150 per fan to have him install 4 fans when she could do in in about 20 min per fan. (she could at least try and if she messed something up she could fall back on the handyman).

1) The main thing to keep in mind when installing a ceiling fan is that not all light fixtures are wired for ceiling fans. If you have 2 lights wiches next to the door and only 1 light in the room then there's a good chance your fixture is wired for a fan. (there is a chance the 2nd switch is wired for an outlet also to plug a lamp into)

2) The first step of course is to turn off the breaker to the room and turn the light switch off so you don't end up being a crispy critter. (Electrocuted)

3) The next step is to take down the light fixture that is being replaced or take off the light plate that was covering the wires in the middle of the room.

4) After the light fixture is taken down you will have to get your spiffy new ceiling fan out of the box and read through the instructions as all ceiling fans go up a little different. They will typically want you to screw a metal plate into the open socket in the ceiling and thread the wires through the medal plate. (The fan will later screw into this plate)

5) The next step is to put the fan together as the directions illustrate, (install blades, lights, trim)

6) Once this is done you will typically hang the ceiling fan on the clip/hanger that comes with the fan mount. This will allow the top of the fan dangle from the ceiling so you can have a free hand to wire everything up.

7) Please read the instructions to wire the fan up as this step is VERY important. You will need to make sure you use wire nuts or compression fittings and be sure to screw on your Ground wire. If your fan has a light and a fan you will need to make sure you correct the correct wires (the fan should be operated by the 2nd switch from the door and the light controlled by the 1st switch from the door).

8) The next step is to make sure your fan is ready to put up per the directions and screw it into the metal plate you installed in #4

9) Next you will put in light bulbs and turn the breaker back on (do this before light switch is turned on)

10) last you will turn on light switch and enjoy the new fan you just installed with a Mexican sword fight using spindles off of a chair you are borrowing from a friend.
